Description
This Sweet Condensed Milk Bread recipe yields soft, fluffy bread with a subtly sweet flavor thanks to the condensed milk. Easy to make and perfect for breakfast or snacks, this bread combines simple ingredients and straightforward steps to create a delicious homemade loaf or buns.
Ingredients
Scale
For the Dough
- 3 cups all-purpose flour (or bread flour)
- 2 ¼ teaspoons instant yeast (1 packet)
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup warm milk (110°F / 43°C)
- ⅓ cup sweetened condensed milk
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons butter, softened
For the Egg Wash
- 1 egg yolk
- 1 tablespoon milk
Instructions
- Activate the Yeast: In a bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and instant yeast. Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes until it becomes foamy. This foam confirms that the yeast is active and ready for use.
- Mix the Dough: In a large bowl, mix together the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, sweetened condensed milk, egg, and softened butter. Stir everything until combined, then knead the dough either by hand for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic, or using a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5-7 minutes.
- First Rise: Shape the dough into a ball and place it into a greased bowl. Cover the bowl and let the dough rise in a warm place for 30-45 minutes, or until it doubles in size.
- Shape the Dough: After the dough has risen, punch it down to release air. Transfer it to a floured surface and shape it into a loaf, then place it in a greased loaf pan. Alternatively, for sweet condensed milk buns, divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and shape each into balls. Cover and let them rest for 15-20 minutes.
- Apply Egg Wash & Bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush the dough’s surface with an egg wash made by mixing the egg yolk with milk. Bake the bread or buns for 25-30 minutes, or until the tops turn golden brown.
- Cool & Serve: Allow the bread to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely. Slice and enjoy the bread warm or at room temperature.
Notes
- Make sure the milk is warm, not hot, when activating the yeast to avoid killing it.
- For a softer crust, you can brush the bread with butter immediately after baking while it’s still warm.
- Store leftover bread in an airtight container to maintain freshness.
- This dough can also be used to make rolls or buns by adjusting shaping and baking time accordingly.
- If you prefer a sweeter bread, you can slightly increase the sugar amount.
