Creamed Cabbage Recipe

  • Author: Hugo
  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

This rich and comforting Creamed Cabbage recipe combines tender cabbage with a creamy, buttery sauce made from sautéed onions and garlic, thickened with flour and enriched with milk and chicken broth. It’s a delicious side dish perfect for cozy dinners and pairs wonderfully with roasted meats or hearty mains.

Ingredients

Scale

Vegetables

  • 1/2 head green cabbage, sliced
  • 1/2 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

Dairy & Fats

  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cups whole milk

Liquids & Others

  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prep the vegetables: Slice the cabbage, dice the onion, and mince the garlic. Arrange all ingredients nearby to streamline the cooking process. Prepare a pan with a lid for cooking.
  2. Sauté onions and garlic: Heat a little oil in the pan over medium heat and sauté the diced onion and minced garlic until soft and fragrant. Take care that the pan is not too hot at this stage.
  3. Add butter and flour: Lower the heat if the pan is too hot, then add the butter. Once melted without browning, stir in the flour to form a roux with the onions and garlic. This will thicken the sauce.
  4. Add liquids and season: Slowly pour in the whole milk and chicken broth while stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Season lightly with salt and pepper. Let the milk steam, then reduce heat to medium-low to gently thicken the sauce.
  5. Cook cabbage: Arrange the sliced cabbage on top of the sauce, cover the pan with the lid, and cook for 15 minutes. Stir the cabbage every 5 minutes to prevent sticking and ensure even cooking. If you notice browning at the pan’s bottom while stirring, reduce heat further.
  6. Season and serve: Adjust seasoning with additional salt if needed before serving. Enjoy this creamy and tender creamed cabbage as a flavorful side dish.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, substitute chicken broth with vegetable broth.
  • Use low-fat milk for a lighter variation, but the texture will be less creamy.
  • To add more flavor, consider adding a pinch of nutmeg or smoked paprika to the sauce.
  • Keep the heat low after adding liquids to prevent the sauce from scorching.
  • Stirring every 5 minutes prevents burning and ensures even cooking.
