Scale
Dough Ingredients
- 2 tsp Active Dry Yeast
- 1/4 cup Warm Water
- 1 cup Milk (room temperature)
- 6 Tbsp Butter (melted and divided)
- 1/3 cup Sugar
- 1 Large Egg (room temperature)
- 1 tsp Salt
- 3 1/2 – 4 cups Flour
Instructions
- Activate Yeast: In a stand mixer bowl, combine warm water and active dry yeast. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes until the yeast dissolves and becomes foamy, indicating it is active.
- Mix Wet Ingredients: Add milk, 4 tablespoons melted butter, sugar, egg, and salt to the yeast mixture. Use the dough hook attachment to mix on low speed for about 1 minute until combined.
- Add Flour Gradually: Gradually add flour, one cup at a time, mixing after each addition until a soft dough forms. The dough should pull cleanly from the sides of the bowl but remain slightly sticky. You may use between 3 1/2 to 4 cups of flour depending on humidity and flour type.
- First Rise: Transfer the dough to a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with plastic wrap or a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
- Shape Rolls: Punch down the risen dough and roll it out on a floured surface to about 1/2 inch thickness. Cut the dough into 20-24 square pieces using a pizza cutter or sharp knife.
- Second Rise: Spray two baking sheets with non-stick cooking spray and place the dough squares at least 1 inch apart. Cover loosely and let rise for 30 minutes or until doubled in size.
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) while the rolls are finishing their second rise.
- Bake Rolls: Bake the rolls for 12-15 minutes until they turn a light golden brown on top and are cooked through.
- Butter Tops: Remove the rolls from the oven and immediately brush the tops with the remaining 2 tablespoons of melted butter for a soft, flavorful crust.
- Cool and Serve: Let the rolls cool slightly before serving to enjoy them warm and fluffy.
Notes
- Make sure the water for activating yeast is warm but not hot (about 105-110°F) to avoid killing the yeast.
- Room temperature eggs and milk help create a smoother dough.
- Cover dough during rising to prevent drying out.
- These rolls freeze well; thaw and warm before serving.
- For extra flavor, brush tops with honey butter instead of plain melted butter.
