These Cherry Pie Bombs are bite-sized, flaky treats filled with sweet cherry pie filling and coated in a cinnamon-sugar blend. Perfectly golden and gooey, they are quick to make using either an air fryer or oven, making a delightful dessert or snack that everyone will love.
Ingredients
Scale
Base
- 1 can Grand-style biscuits (avoid flaky layers or crescent dough)
Filling
- 1 cup cherry pie filling
- Optional: pinch of almond extract (added to filling)
Topping
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- 1/2 cup cinnamon-sugar blend
- Optional: pinch of nutmeg or cardamom (for cinnamon-sugar blend)
Instructions
- Prepare the Biscuits: Split each biscuit in half horizontally to create 16 thin circles. Roll each piece gently into a 4-inch round to ensure an even surface for filling.
- Fill and Shape: Place approximately 1 tablespoon of cherry pie filling in the center of each round. Optionally, add a small pinch of almond extract to the filling for extra flavor. Pinch the edges firmly to seal the filling inside and roll each sealed piece into a smooth ball.
- Coat with Butter and Sugar: Brush each ball evenly with melted unsalted butter. Then roll them in the cinnamon-sugar blend, optionally enhanced with a pinch of nutmeg or cardamom for a warm spice note, coating all sides thoroughly.
- Cooking Options – Air Fryer: Lightly oil the air fryer basket and arrange the pie bombs spaced apart to ensure even cooking. Air fry at 330°F (165°C) for 6–7 minutes, then gently loosen them from the basket and continue cooking for an additional 1–2 minutes until they turn golden brown and puffed.
- Cooking Options – Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place the pie bombs 2 inches apart on the sheet to allow for expansion. Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
- Serve: Allow the bombs to cool slightly on a wire rack for a few minutes to avoid burning, then serve warm for the best gooey cherry filling experience.
Notes
- Ensure biscuits are grand-style and not flaky or crescent dough for proper structure.
- Do not overfill to prevent filling from leaking during cooking.
- Optionally incorporate almond extract for added flavor depth.
- Both air fryer and oven methods work well; air fryer is faster and yields a crispier exterior.
- Let bombs cool slightly before serving to avoid burns from hot filling.
- Cinnamon-sugar blend can be customized with spices like nutmeg or cardamom for variety.
