Cake Ball Recipe

  • Author: Hugo
  • Total Time: 1 hour 10 minutes
  • Yield: About 24 cake balls 1x

Description

Delicious and easy-to-make cake balls coated in rich chocolate, perfect for parties, gatherings, or as a sweet treat. Made from a classic cake mix and dipped in melted chocolate for a smooth, decadent finish.

Ingredients

Scale

Cake Balls

  • 1 box cake mix (any flavor) plus ingredients called for on the box (typically eggs, oil, and water)

Chocolate Coating

  • 2 cups chocolate chips or melting chocolate
  • Optional: sprinkles for decorating

Instructions

  1. Prepare Cake: Preheat oven and prepare the cake mix according to the instructions on the box. Bake the cake as directed until fully cooked and golden brown.
  2. Mix Cake Dough: Immediately after removing the cake from the oven, crumble the hot cake into the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Mix on low speed until the cake forms a dough that can be pressed together to form a ball.
  3. Form Cake Balls: Portion the cake dough and roll or press it into small balls using your palms or a cake pop press. Place the formed cake balls on a cookie sheet and freeze them for at least 30 minutes to chill.
  4. Melt Chocolate: While the cake balls chill, melt the chocolate in the microwave. Heat the chocolate at 50% power in 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval until mostly melted. Continue stirring until all chocolate is smooth and fully melted.
  5. Dip Cake Balls: Using a fork or dipping tool, dip each chilled cake ball into the melted chocolate, ensuring it is fully coated. Gently tap off any excess chocolate.
  6. Set and Decorate: Place the dipped cake balls on a parchment-lined cookie sheet to set. Optionally, top immediately with sprinkles before the chocolate hardens. Allow the chocolate to firm up at room temperature or refrigerate briefly.

Notes

  • Use any flavor of boxed cake mix to customize your cake balls.
  • Freezing the cake balls helps chocolate coating stick better and reduces mess when dipping.
  • Be careful not to overheat chocolate as it can seize; stir frequently while melting.
  • Sprinkles can be added immediately after dipping, before chocolate sets.
  • Store cake balls in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
