Ingredients
Scale
Croissant Bake
- 6 buttery croissants, torn into pieces
- 1 ½ cups mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries)
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- ½ cup heavy cream
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon salt
Topping (Optional)
- ¼ cup powdered sugar (for dusting)
- ½ cup maple syrup or honey
- ¼ cup sliced almonds (for crunch)
Instructions
- Prepare the croissants and berries: Tear the croissants into bite-sized pieces and place them in a greased baking dish. Scatter the mixed berries evenly over the croissant pieces.
- Make the custard: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
- Combine custard with croissants and berries: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the croissants and berries in the baking dish. Press down gently to ensure the croissants absorb the custard.
- Soak the croissants: Allow the croissant and custard mixture to sit for about 10-15 minutes to soak, or cover and refrigerate for up to an hour for a more custard-rich bake.
- Bake the casserole: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the croissant bake uncovered for 35-40 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the custard is set (a knife inserted should come out clean).
- Add optional toppings: Once baked, dust with powdered sugar, drizzle with maple syrup or honey, and sprinkle sliced almonds over the top for added sweetness and crunch, if desired.
- Serve: Let the bake cool slightly before serving warm. Enjoy this cozy breakfast dish as a decadent start to your day.
Notes
- You can prepare this dish the night before by assembling it and refrigerating overnight; bake it in the morning for a quick and easy breakfast.
- Use fresh seasonal berries or frozen mixed berries depending on availability.
- Whole milk and heavy cream provide richness, but you may substitute with lower-fat milk for a lighter version.
- If you prefer less sweetness, reduce the granulated sugar slightly.
- For a nut-free option, omit the sliced almonds.
